O-Co'Nee, Bay Shore: Announcing our second Pin Drop Plein Air Course taking placing July 27 - August 17

Plein Air Painting Class in O-conee Bay Shore, NY
Plein Air Painting Class in O-conee Bay Shore, NY

After a wonderful first Plein Air Course at the private Northport Makamah Beach, we are happy to announce the next, four week Plein Air course will be painting in O-co’Nee, Bay Shore starting on July 27.

This beautiful quiet community just west of downtown Bay Shore,  features many beautiful scenes to paint with interesting foreground subjects:  marinas, waterfalls, old gnarly trees and impressive classic canal front homes built from the 1880’s -1920s.   This location was also chosen to make the class most comfortable and accessible during the August heat.  Students will find many shaded locations to work in within walking distance of their vehicle.  The class is also going to take place during the coolest time of day, with the best light: 7-10am.

In this course Kevin will introduce:

“incorporating foreground interest in your plein air painting”

During the course:

  • The first class will feature a demonstration in which Kevin will be teaching how to paint.
  • Students will then be encouraged to sketch out their subjects in graphite or charcoal, and to produce a solid study in drawing
  • The subsequent weeks will be focused on painting

Time: Mondays 7 to 10 a.m. Beat the heat, and enjoy the early morning light (and coffee)!
Dates: 7/27, 8/3, 8/10, 8/17
Rain Dates: Always the following day, Tuesday, same time or later in the week if necessary

Getting Started:

Inspired yet intimidated by the idea of painting outdoors? Kevin has a thorough video recorded, with all the materials listed on his YouTube page. You can begin the course with nothing but a pencil and sketchpad, or you can arrive with the full painting setup. But regardless of your level, remember Mark Twain's words, that "the secret of getting ahead is getting started."

Plein Air Painting Long Island

"There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep Sea, and music in its roar:
I love not Man the less, but Nature more,
From these our interviews, in which I steal
From all I may be, or have been before,
To mingle with the Universe, and feel
What I can ne’er express, yet cannot all conceal.”

- Lord Byron, 18th century
